What it does
The connector lets Claude work with your own BioStudio account. Claude can only see and do what you can see and do in BioStudio: your projects, their tasks, the lab inventory you have access to, and instrument booking. Nothing else in BioStudio is reachable through it. The ELN, your files, Clarity data, AI keys and administration are not included.
Before you start
- A BioStudio account (the same one you sign in with at server.biostudioai.com).
- A Claude account on a plan that supports connectors.
Connect it
- In Claude, open Customize → Connectors and choose BioStudio from the directory. (Not listed yet? Choose Add custom connector, name it BioStudio, and use the address
https://server.biostudioai.com/mcp.) - Choose Connect. A BioStudio page opens in your browser.
- Sign in to BioStudio in that browser if you are not already signed in, then read what Claude is asking for.
- Choose whether Claude may also make changes (add tasks, book and cancel instruments). Reading is always part of the connection. Then choose Allow.
- Go back to Claude and ask your question.
What Claude can do
| Tool | What it does | |
|---|---|---|
list_projects | Lists the BioStudio projects the person can see: name, status, priority, due date and member count. Use when they ask what projects they have, or to find a project's id before reading its tasks. Personal catch-all projects are left out. | Reads |
get_project | Returns one project's name, description, status, priority, dates, member count and what the person may do in it. Use after list_projects when they ask about a specific project. | Reads |
list_project_tasks | Lists the tasks in one project: title, status, priority, due date and assignee. Use when the person asks what is open, blocked or due in a project, or what is assigned to them. | Reads |
search_inventory | Searches the lab inventory the person can see (reagents, consumables, samples, equipment) by name, vendor, catalog or lot number. Returns quantity, location, lot, expiry and low-stock flags. Use when they ask whether something is in stock, where it is, or what is running low or expiring. | Reads |
list_instruments | Lists the instruments and equipment the person can see in BioStudio's instrument booking: name, type, location, status and booking rules. Use when they ask which instruments there are or which they can book, or to find an instrument's id before checking or making a booking. | Reads |
list_instrument_bookings | Lists instrument bookings in a time window: instrument, start and end, purpose, status and whether the person booked it. Use when they ask when an instrument is free, or what they have booked. | Reads |
create_project_task | Adds one new task to a project the person can edit. Use when they ask to add or create a task. The task is assigned to them only if assign_to_me is true. | Changes data |
book_instrument | Books an instrument for a time slot as the person. BioStudio applies the instrument's own booking rules (approval, minimum and maximum length, no overlaps), so a booking can be left pending approval. Use when they ask to book an instrument. | Changes data |
cancel_instrument_booking | Cancels one instrument booking that the person made or manages. Use when they ask to cancel a booking. | Changes data |
Tools that change data always ask you in Claude before they run, and they only work if you allowed changes when you connected.
Examples to try
- “Which of my BioStudio projects are active, and which have tasks that are blocked?”
- “Do we have any anti-CD3 antibody in stock, and is anything running low or about to expire?”
- “When is the flow cytometer free on Thursday afternoon? Book it for me from 2 to 4 pm for sample acquisition.”
Disconnect
You can end the connection at any time, in either place: in Claude (Customize → Connectors → BioStudio → Disconnect), or in BioStudio (Dashboard → My AI plans → Claude connections). Ending it in BioStudio stops Claude's access immediately.
If something does not work
- “Couldn't reach the MCP server”: check that the address is exactly
https://server.biostudioai.com/mcp, then try again. - “Authorization failed”: sign in to BioStudio in the same browser first, then choose Connect again. The page needs to be opened by Claude, not bookmarked.
- “Changes were not allowed”: reconnect and tick “make changes” on the BioStudio page.
- An instrument or project is missing: Claude only sees what your BioStudio account can see. Check it in BioStudio first.
